Have you ever felt the need to improve your prayer life? You scan your bookshelves and find a couple of books about prayer. You visit your local bookstore to see what they have. The stack on your bedside table grows and you begin reading. After the third book, you begin to realize that your time reading about prayer would have been better spent in actual praying.
After all, isn’t prayer a bit like gardening? We can read all of the gardening books we want, but that doesn’t get the ground prepared, the seeds in, cultivated for growth and eventual harvest. We can read all about prayer and never turn toward the Father in real communication. Let’s put aside reading about prayer and thinking about prayer. Let us pray!
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words. Romans 8:26
