THANKFULNESS

One day, a child of 10 years of age could be heard grumbling from morning until night. Special plans made for the day fell through. She fell off her bike and skinned her knee. She spilled her dinner on her clean shirt and dumped a glass of water on the dinner table. It seemed nothing on this earth was running satisfactorily.

As the day progressed from bad to worse, the child was finally instructed to sit down with pen and paper. Her assignment was to list ten things for which she was thankful. The mother expected items to be listed such as being thankful for parents, a house to live in and food to eat. She was surprised to find what the daughter did list: “Wild canaries came to eat our sunflowers today, we visited the library, I made a phone call to a friend”.

Instead of general thankfulness, the child was very specific, her thoughts on one particular day and its particular happenings. How like children we should become - finding small, special things throughout each day for which to thank God.

This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24

Heavenly Father, please fill my heart with thankfulness from morning to night. In Jesus' name. Amen.
