WHAT'S THE POINT?

When in the midst of a batch of hard work or a tedious project, have you ever asked yourself, "What's the point?"

When in the midst of life, have you ever asked yourself, "What's the point?"

Sure you have, we all have.

Some things we do just seem eternally so insignificant - washing the floor for the hundredth time, only to get dirty again. Entering data into the computer only to be compiled in a report that will be outdated sooner than it is completed. Weeding the garden, knowing that the weeds will return and grow faster than the vegetables. Raking leaves, knowing that you will have to get out there and do it all over again the next day. Loving a child who seems so ungrateful for all you do. Dressing nicely to please the one you love, knowing they won't even notice. "What's the point?"

Well, the point may not be seen easily, here and now. Some points remain unseen by human eyes. In scripture it says,

Worthy art Thou, our Lord and God to receive glory and honor and power, for Thou didst create all things and by Thy will they existed and were created. Revelation 4:11

Can it be enough that we wash the floor to the glory of God? Can it be more than enough that we do meticulous details that only God will ever see? Can it be more than sufficient just to love because He told us to? YES, it can! And that's the whole point anyway - to bring glory to God by our lives.

Heavenly Father, thank You that YOU know the point of every detail of my life. Please, somehow, add glory to Your Name because of it. In Jesus' name. Amen.

EMERGENCY

Years ago, I ran a home-based business, creating veils and hats for brides. Sometimes, due to poor planning on their part, a bride would call at the last minute, needing a veil...”yesterday”. I wanted to say “no” yet found myself saying “yes”.

Half way into the project, I would see the foolishness of saying “yes” to these emergency demands. My family was being neglected, meals were rushed and I felt stressed. Finding myself beginning to grumble, I needed to reign in my emotions and prayerfully decide how to stand firm in the future.

The Lord, in His kindness, showed me how to meet any future emergency by establishing guidelines ahead of time and then sticking to them. He didn’t want me to vacillate by sometimes saying yes and sometimes saying no. He knew what would be needed in each situation. All I had to do was to fit in with His plans.

Scripture says:

You may be asking why I changed my plan. Hadn’t I made up my mind yet? Or am I like people of the world who say yes when they really mean no? As surely as God is true, I am not that sort of person. My yes is yes. II Corinthians 1:17 NLT

Heavenly Father, please teach me when to say “yes” and when to say “no”. When I do say “yes”, help me to work with a willing, glad heart. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

PROTECTED!

Recently, as I was driving down the country road, the wind was whipping the snow across into the next field. Snow drifts were piling up, the windchill was minus one. It was bitterly cold and dangerous out there. How thankful I was to be within my vehicle, protected from the elements - above, below and all around. Protected!

How similar that is to experiencing God’s protection. Amidst the swirl of difficulties and heartache we may experience in this world, God wants to be our Protector. He wants us to go to Him, have Him wrap His loving arms around us - to protect and nurture us - until He sends us back out there - ready to face any kind of storm - warmed by His unfailing Love.

Have you gone to Him for His protection lately?

The eternal God is our dwelling place and underneath are the everlasting arms.
Deuteronomy 33:27

Blessed are all who take refuge in Him. Psalm 2:12

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1

Let’s say with the Psalmist: “For in Thee my soul takes refuge, in the shadow of Thy wings I will take refuge, until the storms of destruction pass by.” Psalm 57:1

Let’s go to Him who loves us beyond measure - for protection and for all else we need.

A SECRET DELIGHT

It was serious business going to the grocery store that particular day. One of us in my family had just begun a healthier eating style. My grocery list seemed long and complex as I searched the aisles for the illusive oat flour and whole grain products.

Suddenly, there she was. Only a baby, really, sitting in her mom’s grocery cart. Her blue eyes twinkled. Since I love to gaze into the faces of young children, I briefly smiled at her.

The response was magical. It was as if she knew me and, without words, giggled, drawing me into her delight as her whole body reacted in joy.

I wondered - what heavenly secrets did she know? Did she want to remind me of how joyous it is to be in the Presence of God?

Whatever she was ‘saying’ to me that day, I got the message. I could feel tears
springing to my eyes as I felt drawn closer to God and His joy-filled Love.

O Lord, our Lord how majestic is Thy name in all the earth!
Thou whose glory above the heavens is chanted by the mouths of babes and infants. Psalm 8:1-2

Heavenly Father, thank You for moments of delight. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

NEW YEAR'S CHOICES

As we look at our brand new calendar, what choices will we make each day? At home, how will we choose to act in love toward those with whom we live? At work, how diligently and carefully will we choose to do that project? At our place of worship, how will we choose to serve and honor others?

C.S. Lewis, the explorer of Narnia, had this to say about choices:

“…every time you make a choice you are turning the central part of you, the part of you that chooses, into something a little different from what it was before. And taking your life as a whole, with all your innumerable choices, all your life long you are slowly turning the central thing either into a heavenly creature or into a hellish creature; either into a creature that is in harmony with God, and with other creatures, and with itself, or else into one that is in a state of war and hatred with God, and with its fellow-creatures, and with itself. To be the one kind of creature is heaven; that is, it is joy and peace and knowledge and power. To be the other means . . . eternal loneliness. Each of us at each moment is progressing to the one state or the other."

I couldn’t have said it better . . . .

Heavenly Father, teach us to make the most of our time, so that we may grown in wisdom. Psalm 90:12

PATHS OF IMAGINATION

My daughter woke in the night with an extremely painful earache. I applied warm, moist compresses to the area, the proper thing to do. As I sent her back to bed, I stayed awake imagining . . . . By the time I was finished imagining, I had my daughter deaf in both ears and enrolled far from home in a school for the deaf.

How silly, I thought, as I awoke the next morning, realizing that my daughter was better . . . not totally deaf.

I began to wonder on what other paths my imagination takes me throughout each day? How about your imagination? Where is it taking you?

We need to commit our every thought into God’s keeping or our imaginations truly will run away with us - far from God.

The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. Genesis 6:5

We destroy arguments and every proud obstacle to the knowledge of God and take every thought captive to obey Christ . . . . II Corinthians 10:5

Heavenly Father, I place my thoughts and imagination into Your hands for safe-keeping. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

PROBLEMS IN PEACE

Recently a friend made this statement: “Maybe I just need problems to make me happy.”

I am reminded of a knight from olden days. When he was in battle, he was magnificent - full of courage, riding on his steed to defeat dragons. In peace time, however, he crumbled into a whining baby. As he returned home to his wife and children, he became unbearable. He just couldn’t seem to get his hands around a rake in the garden, on a hammer to repair the roof, or his arms around his family to love them. He fussed and fumed, impatient to be off to the excitement of the battle once again. He needed “problems” to be happy.

What is there in some of us, as humans, which craves the excitement of “problems” but rebels against the peace of ordinary days? Don’t we realize that the times of peace are precious? So precious that the times of peace are used by God to further train us - to make us ready for anything ahead.

May we recognize that both come from the hand of God - times of peace and times of problems.

Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace at all times in all ways.
II Thessalonians 3:16

Heavenly Father, thank You for times of peace which help to balance out the times of problems. Oh, how I need both! Thank You. In Jesus’ name. amen.
